Editorial cartoon smacks Durango & Silverton train
Author: Copy19

An editorial cartoon on today’s Durango Herald website shows an angry giant labeled “Department of Justice” preparing to smash a D&S train that has set a mountain on fire.   Very harsh.

I hope that useless journalist/cartoonist realizes if that happens the economy of the town will suffer the same fate.

Unfortunately there is no editorial commentary associated with the cartoon as I think folks may be misinterpreting the cartoonist’s intent and he is actually decrying the big, bad Justice Dept. squashing the little D&S.  Then again, I could be wrong.

Uhmmmmm.....I think some of you are misinterpreting the cartoon. The cartoonist is lampooning the DOJ for it's heavy-handed approach, NOT the D&S.

That's how I understand the cartoon.

The Durango newspaper has not been to favorable to the railroad in my opinion.  They print a lot of letters to  the editor critical of the railroad.

Does the Durango newspaper publish staff editorials critical of the railroad and/or articles which are biased against the railroad?  That would be unfavorable coverage.  However, if the worst the paper does is print letters to the editor critical of the railroad, it is presenting the public's viewpoints.  That's a different matter.

I stand corrected.  One must not make snap interpretations when hurried.  Thanks.

Judge for yourself.

“I think it would hurt the town and Silverton. The train’s a huge attraction. The fire was bad. I get it. I’m just not a suing person. Of course, my  home  didn’t burn down, but the train is a big attraction.”

The newspaper is just the messenger in this case. They have comments both pro and con about the fire and the train. Above is just one example. Check out the link and decide for yourself. The cartoon does not necessarily represent how the paper it self feels, in my view. Regardless, unfortunate situation. $25000000 is a lot of money for a tourist railroad to come up with. It amounts to how good their insurance is if they survive this or not.
