This Steam Powered Train Moves Through Town Almost Unnoticed!
Author: LoggerHogger

In 1946 when Western Pacific #84 and her short passenger train made it's way through Oakland under the Adeline Overpass there were few folks on hand to watch her passing.  Can you image the crowd that would be there today to watch this same train?

Nice train. Can't recall having seen a WP express box before. Whose tracks are those in the foreground?

The train must be using SP's tracks to reach the Oakland Mole.

Isn't that the "Feather River Express", the all stops train between Salt Lake City and Oakland?  (Predates the Zephyrette.)  The train has just left the WP's Oakland station, about ten blocks behind.

Can’t recall the name of that crummy beanery next to the locomotive. Eating there just once was enough for me.
Until seeing this photo with a passenger train on that track, I never realized how sharp that curve was.

Spectacular!  I haven't seen many photos showing WP's Mechandise Dispatch boxcars in service.  So cool!

With a non "Mechanical Flagman" manning the crossing.

Thanks for the nice map, so this is between the current Oakland yard and Embarcadero?

I would describe the location as the throat of the current UP yard.
It's interesting that the curve coming off the WP is still there, although it dead-ends before reaching 3rd St. and appears to be part of the AMTRAK maintenance facility.  Toward the south and west is a large container loading facility for ships.

The current view from the Adeline overpass is shown below.  The large brick building in the center of the picture is also in Martin's photo.
