B & W 759 - Set 7 of 9
Author: scoopdejour

Back to Conneaut, Ohio in the Summer of 1968

Photo 1 - 759 with jacket and lagging removed

Photo 2 - Joe Karal, in the pit, and me Hank Webber assisting as we prepare to remove the draw bar pins

Photo 3 - Lee Smith and Joe Karal with backs to the camera assisting me as we proceed to remove the draw bars

It was hard work but very rewarding when doing the tasks wiith like minded personnel, especialy with those who have the experience!

Respectfully,
Hank

Great memories, Hank ....

I regret NOT having asked Joe how he would have protected the cast iron, stoker-tube bowl,
if he wanted to jack-down and force that drawbar pin, by using the 'bowl' as a fulcrum.
Instead, I insisted that you guys burn out, the rusted drawbar pin...
Bad mistake, safety-wise,  on my part.

Joe would have figured out a better way, safer way, if I'd asked the right question.

We were all incredibly young, then.
Thank God, we had Joe & Dale, and many other experienced RRer's  to keep us safe.

W.

First time I have ever seen a split head cover on a cylinder.  Is that unusual?

It's wood, for special purpose..
Fitted to each cylinder.

True historic treasures. Thanks for bringing the back story for my memories of 759 in operation.

Hank -   many thanks for posting these photos!  It sure brings back great memories for me waiting for 759 to come to Lebanon, N.J.   In the third picture,  I am glad to see you are wearing your hard hat and safety glasses and we could have seen you better with a yellow safety vest -  LOL!!!!

We cut the oak wood to equal half the cylinder diameter. Before moving from Steamtown to Conneaut, we stuffed the cylinders with oil soaked rags as our means of lubricating the pistons for our travels.
