Steam & Excursion > Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: K36 #484 at Gravity HillDate: 01/05/20 04:47 Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: K36 #484 at Gravity Hill Author: Rattie K36 locomotive #484 powers up Gravity Hill in this clip. The location is sometimes referred to as State Line Hill. This is because the railroad crosses the border between New Mexico and Colorado three times in the space of two miles of the climb. Filmed in September 2019.

The track gang have done an amazing job.-------------------------------------------------------

Date: 01/05/20 09:37 Re: Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: K36 #484 at Gravity Hill Author: Rattie I'm delighted that you noticed. We go to great lengths to get good sound as well as images. Two sound recorders were used in addition to the sound that was recorded on the lineside cameras. If you turn the sound up and listen to the first couple of clips again you will hear wind noise, but properly recorded without the annoying buffeting that you get when it's not done properly.

That was a very, very, good video. Audio was excellent as well as the cooperation from the scenery, various camera perspectives and of course the loco, consist and really great condition on the roadbed and track. I also loved the way the crew had the loco "set up" climbing those grades, some pretty darn good people in that cab! East side always seems to be second fiddle to the Cumbres grade
but some of us actually prefer the East side. Out Date: 01/05/20 16:44 Re: Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: K36 #484 at Gravity Hill Author: 1500fan Wow. That really captures the experience.

I have a bunch of sound super8 that needs to be converted from a rider freight special from1983. No drone pacing back then, but riding a motor car in front of the train, quite some unique film for sure up close and personal.

Date: 01/06/20 10:57 Re: Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: K36 #484 at Gravity Hill Author: WW The track gang on the C&TS are some quite unsung heroes. The gang never exceeds 6 to 12 employees, all very hard-working and dedicated. Their leader, who sort of likes to stay out of the limelight, is a former D&RGW/SP/UP track "expert" with close to five decades of experience. The excellent condition of the track is a tribute to his leadership and the dedication of his employees. His management philosophy he sums up as "you are only as good as the people you have working for you."
So, to all you railfans, the next time you ride the C&TS and see a member of the track gang, thank them for what they do. Not only does the good condition of the track make for a more comfortable ride, it greatly reduces the wear and outright destruction of locomotive and train running gear that rough track can cause.
