What is that on the stack?
Author: Hou74-76

Hello Steam Fans,

Can anyone tell me what the apparatus is that is mounted just forward of the stack on the this Frisco locomotive?  It seems to be something Frisco added on many locomotives.  Is it a light to illuminate the exhaust?

Thanks, I would really like to know.

I beleive it is a light so the fireman can see the smoke at night.

Stack light so they could check the exhaust "color" at night. Ideally you would be able to see the light through the exhaust.
I've only seen them on oil burning locomotives.

That's right, it's a light so the fireman can judge the density of the smoke at night.

Cheers, Dave

Do any currently operable steamers use them?

I would sincerely doubt it, as most of the current steamers dont operate at night.

Yes, the Washington Park & Zoo Railway 4-4-0 #1 has a stack light as seen here at the zoo station and en route on the now-abandoned Zoo Loop route a few hundred feet north of the snowshed.

T&P 316 at the Texas State RR has one.  Not operating now, but did up until 5 years ago.

1522 has one.  They work.  It was a Pyle National casting.  Frisco had them on most engines, both coal and oil burning.

There were a few Missouri Pacific coal burners with them.    T&P used them on all road power.

SLRG 18 has one.  The Grand Canyon RR installed it.

These stack lights were common on the Rock Island steamers during the mid-30's to the end of their final retirement in in 1952.

Southern 401 at Monticello has one. It’s removable.
