Solution for turntable question at Frostburg.
Author: PlyWoody

If there is not enough vertical curve leading into the turntable, then build the vertical curve into the 100' long turntable.  That would require a 7 inch shim in the center and other shims on each tie per appropriate raise.

Regarding the belief that there is a 22.5 degree curve leading into the station track and the locomotive specification allow for only 22 degrees.  You first must check the track gauge as a 22 degree curve correct gauge is 57 inches as 1/4" is added for each 10 degree of curvature, which requires 31 feet of track for each 1/4" change.
Then string line the curve and take the offset measurement every 31 feet and the track may be moved a half inch or so to remove any kink and it would then be easy to eliminate that half degree of kink and the engine is go even at 22 degree.  You must check to see that you have proper wider gauge. FRA call it gage. I have posted the string line method as in the PRR MW 1.

When you are ready to replace the 100 timber on that turntable I have another suggestion of how to get two feet more in turntable length to make the engine easier to spot for turning.

Articular locomotives, even a large as N&W Y-6b operated over humps with 1200' vertical radius.  This 2-6-6-2 only needs for the pilot wheel to lower 2" and trailing wheel to lower 2" and 3th and 4th driver to raise 2" on a 1200 radiul hump.  They can handle twice that in their springing.  There will be no need to change any of the crossing off the turntable.

Or it would have been easier to restore another engine, such as the 734.

In the 3rd drawing, the engine might make the trip, but it looks like the tender and draw bar might not.

Why assume there's no suspension travel in  the locomotive?

Re-spiking down 200 feet of rail to 100 timber is not a expensive or big job. Can be done in one day compared to years to rebuild a locomotive. What a stupid reply.

I am gonna flip this statement onto your statement. Your response is stupid and asinine, and the poster did not deserve such a reply.

The fella is right. Had they just worked on 734, it would have been running several years ago. They would not have the headache of trying to raise the millions of dollars, misleading the public on announced dates of operation, etc etc etc....  Sure, 734 struggles with the workload, but they had a system that worked. Here, they are trying to reinvent the wheel.

Regardless, trust that WMSR and Diversified Rail Services (place most of your trust in DRS) that there is a plan to handle the turntable. Gary Bensman is a smart man, and I am fairly confident that he (along with many other restoration experts) are familiar with the game of dealing with inept railroad operators.

Unfortunately, WMSR's tactics have most likely led the public (and probably politicans) to form opinions of the railroad that aren't in a very good light.

One can only hope that 1309 is their saving grace in pulling WMSR out of the rut they are in.

I've posted previously that Mr. Plywoody needs to contact Gary Bensman and make an appointment to meet him on the WMSR, and subsequently provide full assistance in solving any and all potential problems with 1309 vs. Frostburg. Posting all this "information" here on TO is just waste of bandwidth.

Plywoody has to visit the 2926 group in Albuquerque first and fix all the track issues he claims they have...

Since you brough it up, The 2926 track is still not up to the standard plans of BNSF or UP but I give them credit for dumping the tree service contracton who spiked, at angles, the existing storage track. They now have a certified railroad contractor.  Their track is not even to the standard requirement of a siding and they plan to yo-yo like they are on a main line.  Garry will see this suggested fix for his concern at Frostburg.

If you need to buy any long spikes for shiming the rails on the turntable you can obtain any size at Keystone Spike Co.
