Union Pacific 3985 at Speer, Wyoming.
Author: hank

We pace UP 3985 as it is nearing Speer to meeet the Denver Post excursion in May 1984.  At Speer the 3985 will takethe place of UP 6922 to power the train to Laremie, Wyoming.  The second clip shows the 3985 making a spectacular start as they leave Speer.

Thanks for viewing.

I believe the 6922 was the unit featured in the UP billboard with a big boy that read "Big Then..Bigger Now".    It is now on display in Cody Park in North Platte along with Challenger 3977.

Jon I think you are right about 6922 being on the posters.

Hank, I wish to thank you for your posting of these videos. I was on that excursion back in 1984, and I echo some of the other posters who say if you have more videos or movies of this excursion, please do not hesitate to post them. I did take some still photos on this trip, but over the intervening years, those pictures have been lost - so I appreciate seeing the 3985 in her finest moment.

Great videos. Just wondering why 3985 didn't power the train out of Cheyenne.

Lets try an pay attention. The excursion was from Denver to Laramie, and back to Denver. Thus, 3985 being a coal burner and prior to auxiliary water tenders, only powered the train from Speer, to Laramie and back to Speer.

IIRC, the railroad station was in downtown Denver, and they did not want this smoke-belching behemoth fouling up their skyline. Hence, the 6922 powered the train from Denver to Speer, where the 3985 coupled on for the trip to Laramie.
