Steam & Excursion > C&O 614 On A Gloomy, Dark DayDate: 11/10/20 07:51 C&O 614 On A Gloomy, Dark Day Author: sig292 A gloomy, dark, and rainy day isn't all bad when there is a live steam locomotive nearby! The combination of weather and motive power can make for an interesting photo opportunity.
I was riding one of the C&O 614 Hoboken, NJ to Port Jervis, NY excursion trains on October 19, 1996 and was very disappointed in the lousy weather. That did not stop me from shooting several rolls of film, with varying results, during the stop at Port Jervis. Here is one (of only a few) that I think actually benefited from the rain, not only capturing the dark grey mood of the day but also the awesome power of steam. Enjoy! -Ken Gear Date: 11/10/20 08:50 Re: C&O 614 On A Gloomy, Dark Day Author: refarkas Well done. Rain can bring a certain beauty to steam not seen on a sunny day.
Bob Date: 11/10/20 10:53 Re: C&O 614 On A Gloomy, Dark Day Author: co614 I'll long remember that day. We had a full train ( 1200 coach passengers, 150 1st. class ) and we got hit with a classic fall Noreaster storm. It poured rain all day, temps in the 40's and lots of wind. Despite these horrible conditions an amazing percentage of our riders took part in the 3 photo runbys ( 15 mph, 30 mph, 55 mph ) we staged at Port Jervis and stayed out there in the cold driving rain !!!
When we got back to Hoboken ( 16 minutes early) we found the terminal parking plaza flooded by the storm and cars up to their fenders under water !!! Great memories, thanks, Ross Rowland Date: 11/10/20 12:39 Re: C&O 614 On A Gloomy, Dark Day Author: boejoe And thank you, Ross and your crew members, for the memories you provided to lots of railfans - then and now.
