This Is An Interesting Piece To Be Missing On This Transfer Trip!
Author: LoggerHogger

Back in 1937, the Long-Bell Lumber Company decided to transfer their Baldwin 2-6-2 #93 from their operations in Longville, Louisiana to their logging line out of Longview, Washington.  The locomotive was routed through Los Angelas where this photo was taken.  The mystery for me has always been, why was her tire on the center driver removed for this move?

The tire would most likely have been a blind tire as that was common on many rod-type logging lokies of the day.  That should not have created any issues for the cross-country trip.  While it is possible she was stopped in LA to have that tire replaced, it does not look like she is near a shop for that work to be done.  Further it appears that the driver has been blocked up for the trip without the tire.

We know she made the trip in fine shape and was placed into service on the Longview, Portland & Northern as their #650.  The mystery of the missing tire remains just that, a mystery.

Speculation, were the treads on blind tires wider?  If so, would they strike the raised shoulders on self-guarded frogs?

Alex, that is the most plausible reason I can think of.

You know, the LA Area is notorious for tire thieves!

Somebody stole the rods too.  Does that make them "hot rods?" ;^)

Thanks Martin, for this photo of the most modern of the Long Bell locomotives assigned to the Longville operation.  Long Bell had a lot of 2-6-2's in their Louisiana and Texas operations, but most of them were slide valve, saturated locomotives, unlike #93 here which appears to be newer than the engines numbered both above and below it from the photos that I have.

If the brakes are still working (probably not) the thicker brake shoe just might reach the wheel center anyway.
