It could also be used to signal the locomotive from the caboose in the dark. The cupola markers were standard equipment on D&RGW caboose until the late 1930's. Historically, the D&RGW saved the wheel marking for passenger equipment only. Date: 05/03/22 18:24 Re: RGS 20 Freight To Osier Video Author: mcdeo For the white on the wheels, yes. Using the retainers or just in general, 100 year old cars, brakes can make for sticky wheels, so I think all of the C&TS equipment is setup this way. I've been on runs that the crew is literally watching for rotating wheels all the time. Not a fully common chore, but one that is import to the smooth operation of maintaining the equipment.
