What was the advantage back in the day of a Cotter Steam Chest vs. a standard steam chest?

I've never heard of Cotter Steam chests.
About what time period were they available?
A "patent/royalty-work around" avoidance scheme ?
Any drawings, pics available?

Probably a 'balanced' variant scheme for outside admission, slide valves.
Would have been the era before 1910?
That's  my guess.
