SLSF #1630 2-10-0 Running at Illinois Railroad Museum
Author: kschmidt626

Greetings,

Had the chance to get down to Illinois Railroad Museum on Saturday September 10, 2022.  It was a beautiful and steam was running.  I was going down there because I had purchased throttle time on the 3 truck Shay #5.  That's a different story and video coming later.  So I took the drone and got a shot of one of the runs of #1630.  This was the last run of the day.  I added video from an earlier run where I had recorded the sound while I was standing down at the grade crossing.  It was a great day at IRM.  Luckily I signed up for Sept 10th.  Sunday Sept 11th has been a nasty weather day.  Raining constantly since early in the morning.  THANKS to all of the volunteers down at IRM it was a great day.   Enjoy !!

Thanks
Keith

What's "horrible" about it?  That is a standard Frisco steam locomotive whistle.

Maybe so, but it sounds like its blowing on 50psi.  Something is off with it.

If I remember correctly, there is a private residence very near that grade crossing. Thus, the IRM tend to not blow whistles/horns loudly there, unless there are vehicles present.

When I was at the museum about a month ago the whistle sounded like a clogged trumpet. Maybe it's worn out needing a tune up? Or maybe the 1630 isn't at full operating pressure?

So it sounds like the whistle is being blown at low pressure.  Beats being stuffed and mounted.

Just have to back up those talking about low pressure.   For example:  T&P 2-10-4 whistles if blown at 185 lbs of pressure have a very mellow steam boat soud.  But, get them up to the operating pressure of 255 lbs and they get a shrill sound along with some squaks.
