UP 5511 out in the sun
Author: Hillcrest

UP Steam crew has the 5511 pulled outside in preparation for the upcoming trip to Silvis I would presume, 844 is out in the sun also. Noticed a few days ago 5 of the donated UP passenger cars have arrived at the RRHMA Facility and are now housed inside next to some former Milwaukee Road passenger equipment. There are some great pictures of the progress at the Silvis facility on their website, where you can also make a donation to the cause if the mood strikes...Pretty impressive what they've accomplished so far.

Cheers, Dave

The 5511 was seen a little while ago coupled to the 4014 and being backed out of the shop, 4014 was hot doing the work. We must be pretty close to a trip.

Don't think so. Ever since the current manager disposed of the #96 (steam shop diesel switcher), they have to use their own locomotive, i.e. 4014.

To be clear I meant a trip to Silvis with the donated equipment. I doubt the 4014 is going anywhere out of the yard anytime soon. I am suprised however they have the 4014 fired up. They also have the 844 outside and was seen being moved by this small orange contraption they have been using to move equipment lately.

UP 4014 and 5011 are out doing test runs currently.

I bet its been a very long time, since the 5511 was out on the mainline..and even longer when it was on the mainline, under steam.

Does 5511 have plain bearings on the axles?

There are a bunch of videos from today posted on various Facebook pages of 4014 shuffling about with 5511. Never seen a Young valve gear in motion before!

Also noteworthy is the fact that 5511 has a Coffin feedwater heater.

I've been watching the videos (never seen Young valve gear in action that I can remember) and am Impressed at the "road test" since the locomotive hasn't moved since 1992, correct? They added an "Idler" flat car between 4014 and 5511 also, anyone know why? Bridge load?

Perhaps more braking?

The last time 5511 saw the mainline was when it was brought from Green River to Cheyenne.
At that time it was towed dead.

Nope. It was removed in the early 1950s, and operated its last years without any feedwater heater system. Thus, she doesn't have one now.

I would assume the reason they were going back and forth yesterday was to lube the 5511? Would it be a safe assumption they they are going to tow it to silvis instead of hauling it as previously mentioned?
I am still suprised they didn't get a diesel to do this job unless they had the 4014 hot for something else.

There's a great shot of 4014, 3985, 5511, 844 and 6936 posted on the UP Steam FB page (I think by Ed).  I know it's been a few years since 6936 saw the mainline but did they get her running or will she be towed dead?

I think the last any of us remember was that it went to North Platte for work and was returned. Did it ever
run after that?

I had no idea that UP had Coffin FWH equipped locomotives. I did see the picture of the 5511 in a more recent thread. The extended smokebox is noticeable.
