Steam & Excursion > Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In JulyDate: 09/26/24 08:18 Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: FiveChime This is from location "Bush" east of American, on the eastbound run over Donner, a location I've not seen video
of 4014 from ...yet. An exciting day for many of us involved in the chase over Donner. Regards, Jim Evans You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! Date: 09/26/24 09:28 Re: Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: RailRat Hear that train a comi'n!
Wow that's some great anticipation hearing 4014 for so long before it actually appears, plus the echo/reverb sound here is fantastic! I had severe heat stroke on Thursday so I sat out Sunday. I wish I went but that was not possible. I love how you followed 4014 as it passes, that's my style, we can always see the cars as they pass. Nice! SR Date: 09/28/24 12:42 Re: Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: coach Question: 4014 is working hard, but so is the SD-70 helper. It's only a 12-car train, and not even heavy cars. Could 4014 have handled that train alone, given that the diesel was working so hard? Given the grade, wouldn't that demand on the engine help it reach "superheat" status, thus improving its performance??
It amazes me, because I remember SP 4449 cruising over this same pass decades ago, no diesel present. 4014 just seems to be working so hard here, yet with barely anything in tow. And I also compare that to 3985 hauling that huge APL train years ago over that grade on Archer Hill, making great speed, unassisted. ------------------------------------------------------- > Question: 4014 is working hard, but so is the > SD-70 helper. I disagree. Having spent my entire working career with EMD, including lots and LOTS of time with the 16-710G3 prime movers, that sure doesn't sound like that SD70M is "working hard". It's only a 12-car train, and not > even heavy cars. Really? Those damned UP business cars are pretty damned heavy, plus being on a better than 2% ascending grade, makes it worse. Could 4014 have handled that > train alone, given that the diesel was working so > hard? Again, I really don't think the diesel is working all that hard. Anyway, 4014 probably could have handled that train all alone but, what would be the point? Given the grade, wouldn't that demand on > the engine help it reach "superheat" status, thus > improving its performance?? Probably, give enough time for everything to "balance out". > It amazes me, because I remember SP 4449 cruising > over this same pass decades ago, no diesel > present. WHAT????? Please tell us all when SP 4449 ascended Donner Pass with a train, unassisted! 4014 just seems to be working so hard > here, yet with barely anything in tow. Wrong again. And I > also compare that to 3985 hauling that huge APL > train years ago over that grade on Archer Hill, > making great speed, unassisted. Totally different situation, and grade. Date: 09/29/24 08:16 Re: Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: DRGWK59 My 2 cents; ONE CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY MAINLINE, OR SHORTLINE, OR TOURIST steam videos! Each one is "little different" even if take by the same person(s).

Can't you hear how hard that SD-70 is working? It almost over rides the sound of the steam. So, if it's not working hard, then what throttle setting do you think it's in? 4449 ran over Donner Pass in the 1970's before it pulled the Freedom Train, unassisted, pulling a shorter train (4-5 cars), but it did happen. It was widely covered, and recorded. My question comes back to stuff Wes Camp talks about. He gave a good explanation that because the engine isn't really worked all that hard, and the draft in the firebox never really gets the bricks hot, it never reaches "superheat" status, and thus is very inefficient with its water use. He claims that's why that engine is going thru water so fast on runs like this one. But if it DID reach superheat status, then I'm wondering: "How would 4014 handle this grade, and how many cars would it be able to pull, unassisted?" Look, it's fantastic this engine has been restored and operated by UP. Full kudos to them and all the people who make it happen. I'm not complaining. Rather, I was asking a question about the capabilities of the engine. When I see videos of Big Boys pulling mile long trains of loaded reefers over Sherman Hill, but then this one requires diesel assistance with a meager 12-car train over Donner, I'm simply asking "Why?" Again, it's great to see it all--I'm simply asking what this engine could possibly do on Donner, unassisted. It's a question of curiosity. Again, I think Mr. Camp probably explained it. I was just looking for other opinions. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/29/24 11:23 by coach. When I see > videos of Big Boys pulling mile long trains of > loaded reefers over Sherman Hill, but then this > one requires diesel assistance with a meager > 12-car train over Donner, I'm simply asking "Why?" For on thing, Donner Pass is over 2%, while Sherman Hill was under 2%. Secondly, speed is of the essence on such moves, and 4014 appeared to be at the speed limit in that video (25 MPH?). Slugging it out unassisted at 10 MPH, would have proved nothing on that grade. > Again, it's great to see it all--I'm simply > asking what this engine could possibly do on > Donner, unassisted. Date: 10/05/24 20:55 Re: Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: gonx Since I'm a diesel guy, I most definitely hear the sd70m working hard. It dominates the going away sound.
Date: 10/06/24 07:43 Re: Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: wcamp1472 To me the sound is way too weak to be an uphill fight.
My bet, by the lazy steam exhsust, it's only a hissss... and the diesel sounds like it's in dynamic braking mode. I say its "level", to down-hill. BB can really thunder his way, if an uphill sutuation.... here, all you're getting is blower-hiss and a low-density, clear, exhaust cloud, that's barely gray... not like a white-hot, fuel-fed, firebox, with glowing refractory bricks... He's got the valve gear in full, maximum travel ( as when coasting -- to try to give maximum lubrication distribution during each stroke) yet the noise is way too-low intensity, and the throttle opening sounds as if it's 20% or lower ... Maybe a location name and a track chart can clear-up the track grades in this area? W. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/06/24 07:46 by wcamp1472. Date: 10/06/24 08:03 Re: Had Enough Of UP 4014 - Here Is One More From Donner In July Author: BoilingMan The location is apx MP 160 or 161 (between Towle and Midas). I live at MP 156 and the grade is about 2.5, possibly a bit more, at my place. So I’d guess MP 160 to be very close to that- at least 2%, probably 2+

A 4-8-8-4..... and 10 coaches, 300 psi boiler, and that's uphill ! I'll bet a 4000 would be struggling! No wonder he's running with a wide-open blower and "down in the corner"! I know! The private cars are weighted to 200 tons! W. |
