Espee's commute GP9s
Author: TonyJ

I have a little trouble realizing it's been several decades since GP9s powered commute trains on the peninsula. Here are a few snapshots from my camera. This first shot shows SP3000 and a sister, plus two SDP45s at the 7th Street engine facility in San Francisco. - Tony J.

Looking from the other end in the background is the old Third & Townsend depot. Driving on those old cobblestone streets would give your car's suspension a thrill. - Tony J.

I grew up with the first generation geeps--loved the sound of that 567. They were my second favorite to the covered wagons. Third favorite was EMD switchers. Those were the days. Then you had cabooses too.....

Nice pics Tony.

The shot of 7th St reminded me of the pig tails you had to hook up to the main air hose starting with the first out engine at the bumper. They were on a chain welded to end rail. Something like a deadend used on the last passenger car to keep the hose up out of the ties. The idea was if any of the engines started to roll, the whole consist would go into emergency. Sometimes if you got into a hurry and cut your engine away to head for the depot and forgot to close the angle cocks the whole string would go into big hole and you had to go and reset the lot.

Nice shots Tony! They bring back some hostling memories from my early years in engine service. Of course the 3000 series GP9s were soon to be rebuilt and renumbered in the 3180 and 3190 series. Here is 3193 ready to pull Train 169 out of San Jose on a Saturday morning in 1979.

Thanks for the posts Tony. Brings back a lot of memories of a much simpler time on the Peninsula when no one ever heard of the word "Caltrain."

Thanks for sharing Tony, I remember as a youngin' riding the SP commute service before it fell into the hands of Caltrain and the equipment changed. I always enjoyed riding behind the GP9's, and in the gallery cars, which rode so much better than the current cars on the property. Too bad I wasn't around to work under the much simpler times as 'calhog' mentioned.
