BN SD-9 6240 Jan 1996
Author: cozephyr

Bitter cold didn't keep Burlington Northern SD-9 6240:2 (later renumbered BNSF 6137) from its Denver, CO, chores. January 5, 1996 found it at the BNSF Denver Diesel Shop in company with SD40-2 7896. The BN 6240 had been Duluth, Minnesota & Iron Range 132 built February 1958.

Was this the only SD-9 to get large BN nose logo?

I think there were two others. High hood #6217 I know for sure because I have pictures of it switching Denver and I think there was one more in the 623X group. 6236 sticks in my mind for some reason. Anyone else help on this one?

When we (Port of Tillamook Bay) received BNSF 6139 (ex-BN 6242) it had the large logo on the nose. We bought 10 units total, and that was the only one with the big nose logo.

BN 6240-6247 were all chop nosed and all wore the whiteface scheme like the one in your picture. 2 were ex DMIR and the other 6 were of Chessie heritage - B&O I believe. Nice pic by the way!

Why used SD-9 locomotives?

Why would the BN have purchased used SD-9 locomotives?

Price must have been good.

They needed low speed, heavy duty engines for
yard and local work, and the downsizing of SD40-2's
had not started yet. In their hump yards, they
often pull big cuts and the SD9's were ideal for
that. IIRC, there are three still running on
the BNSF, and that's what they do.
