Espee Ten Wheelers
Author: TonyJ

Back in 1961 I rode a PCC-R&LHS special to the Antelope & Western's "golden spike celebration." During the trip our chartered buses took us to see 4-6-0 Sp2252 on display in Roseville. This shot, taken with my old Argus "brick", was the first time I saw the 2252; the next time was some thirty years later. I've forgotten what the little "Live Steamer" locomotive was that was on display behind the 2252. - Tony J.

Ten Wheeler SP2381 was the last 4-6-0 on the Bayshore deadline. I took this photo in January 1960 and (from memory) I believe 2-8-0 SP2759 is coupled behind it. I also like the old beet gone nearby. - Tony J.

Here's one of two shots showing the 2381 in happier times. It's ready to back into the S&W spur in the background. Date and location unknown. - Tony J.

Shots #9 and #10 of 2381 are at Redwood City, CA (actually right at Redwood Junction and the engine is coming from the "yard" through the interlocking to back into S&W).

Thank you for those Tony, and the 2-6-0's also.

I thought those shots were likely shot somewhere on the peninsula. Thanks for the confirmation. - Tony J.

2355 at Taylor. My dad was given the headlight off this engine by the Chief special Agent for LA. In fact brought it to him at the Police Department he worked at. Set it on the counter and asked him to watch it for him. Thought it might be prone to walking away. A few days later he came in and asked if it had walked away?.. guess it did. Darn, the Special Agent had to find another because the 2355 had been changed from scrapping to display. So the headlight or what's left of it on the displayed 2355 is not the original

I think I have a color slide of the 2355 in L.A. I'll look for it. - Tony J.

Great to see the 2353 in action. I helped restore this locomotive back in the 90s at Campo, Ca. Same tender, now out of service due to major cracks in the firebox. Ex SP 2720, now SD&AE 104 there also.
