Author: drew1946

September 1978, SDP40F's 532 and 617 leading the Starlight South (railroad East) thru Alviso, CA.
As far as the SP was concerned this was actually Amtrak Train #12 after it left Oakland

They should bring back that old Amtrak logo on the second unit. That was pretty cool...

Drew,

Superb shot. May I ask what type of scanner and software you are using?

Nice one Drew. That's when you could still see the river. Now there's a bunch of reeds which over the view.

I've been surprised somewhat recently to discover that many younger fans (oops - gave myself away) don't realize that the original Amtrak logo was referred to by fans at the time as the "pointless arrow," which of course, it was.

Drew, I used to work near Alviso in the early and mid-1980s and during lunch time would drive out to Alviso to bag whatever came by. One of my favorite Bay Area haunts, it still is a favorite location for Bay fans.

My vote also goes to the 617 with the original paint scheme... never did care for the full-length stripes that came out later.

I am using a Minolta Dimage 5400 scanner and touching the scans up with Photoshop. 95 % of my slides are Kodachrome 25 except for Ektachrome 400 and Kodachrome 200 use for low light situations. I am now using Kodachrome Pro64 and some digital, depending on the subject.

Thanks for the reply Drew. Having just taken the digital plunge, I'm in the market for a scanner to scan the last 20 years of slides.

Look forward to seeing more of your scans...
