F40 229 at LAUPT in November of 1978, I think the train is actually leaving LA and is backing out to turn on the wye before heading to San Diego locomotive first (the way it is SUPPOSED to be).

Another one with icicle breakers---guess you never know about LA weather.

As an aside---these slides were processed by some cut rate outfit--money was tight at the time and I was trying to save a few bucks. I almost threw them out but in 1978 I had a premonition that 28 years later I could use Photoshop to improve them. Now if you believe that....

Yet another great picture, thank you for sharing these! If you happen to come across (or someone?) a photo showing the icicle breakers in detail, post 'em! I just might have to make some replicas to put on the new Daylight F40... :)

Ole 229, I would see that one on the surf line a lot as a kid. Belive it got cabbaged.

It did.

229 sticks out in my mind as having the worst P5a horn on Amtrak. As originally conceived, the P5a was a thing of beauty, but casting changes in the mid-70's lead to some real stinkers. I recorded 229 in 1989-91 on the Southwest Chief and again on the San Joaquins shortly before it was cabbaged in the late 90's:
