My great Uncle George Flemming was the agent at Springfield, Ill. for many years. He tried the UP at Cheyenne but was almost killed when a boxcar fell on him. After also trying the SP he found that the grass was greener at home. It was the Chicago & Alton when he hired out. He retired in 1967 and passed away in 1992 at age 94.

How did it work? Date: 11/30/06 11:40 Re: GM&O yard switchers Author: pepperidge Great photos! Thanks for sharing. Wish we had audio--very distinctive sounding little beasts.
As an aside, everyone rags on UP for dirty locomotives, but these relics of the "good old days" are far from pristine, either. Pepperidge Date: 12/25/06 06:13 Re: GM&O yard switchers Author: Wflemming Hi,
My name is Bill Flemming (Jr.) and I have been working on my family history for some time now. I got a lot of GM&O and other material (including family history) from your Uncle George who was also my Uncle George (I think). You seem to know a lot about his history at the railroad ... more than I do. I can be contacted at Sungf@aol.com. I would love to exchange information ... so drop me a line. Bill |
