Answer to the Lake Conroe thread
Author: topper

A week or so ago RailDawg posted this question about a possible old rail or tram like in the bottom of Lake Conroe in Texas:

http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,1356058,1356058#msg-1356058

In my never-ending quest to be of service to you Trainoders readers (yeah, right), I passed the question along to Bill Neill, retired SP train dispatcher and rules instructor. Here's what Bill and his friends came up with. (You may have to cut-and-paste some of the embedded links.)

Subj: Railroad at the bottom of Lake Conroe

Rich:

Referring to the query in Trainorders.com a week ago about Lake Conroe and a rail line shown on the map of same, I cannot confirm anything factual but think I may have some information of use.

Courtesy of Mr. Bernstein, I have just seen a few
photos taken in Conroe in 1939 by Dallas oilman E. L. DeGolyer, who was very much a railfan. The photos are of a sawmill of The Conroe Lumber Company as well as various items of equipment including one
locomotive, a log skidder on a flatcar, and some miscellaneous log bunks.

Additionally, there is this information that is of interest but DOES NOT give any information to confirm the location of this operation and its relationship to the San Jacinto River and what is now Lake Conroe:

Incidentally, this is an awesome resource for Texas logging operations:

You'll like this if you don't already know about it:

Separately, here with is what I think is a site for the Securities & Exchange Commission that affords access to a phenomenal amount of information about US businesses. I have capriciously entered "Union
Pacific" and herewith is the URL for that site:

Clicking on "home" will give you the sordid details.

Best wishes,
Bill Neill

If the above doesn't answer your questions, I don't know what will.
