Road Trip 1983, Sunshine, Kansas, and Alco's Part 8

June 23, 1983 Continued

Time to head south to Kansas. Dropping south out of Kearney we made our way down to US36 which we would follow east hoping to find something on the Kyle Railroad.

#1 This was a good move, for near Lebanon KS we found (along with sunshine) the Kyle 4240 making it’s way west along the old Rock Island main line to Colorado.

#2 Then back tracking a bit, we headed back to Smith Center to catch the 4240 coming through town.

#3 We continued east to Belleville Kansas where we would turn south on US81, and head down to my parent’s place in Marquette. But first we just had to check out the yard. What we found was the 4246/4258 doing some switching.

#4 While waiting for something more to happen we shot the old Rock Island depot.

#5 Here the units come back down a rather steep incline after shoving several cars up to a grain elevator.

#6 Then one more shot as move back into the yard and tie up for the day. Oh well, time to go anyway.

#7 We make a short stop at Salina and find the UP165 sitting in perfect sun.

#8 And finally before heading for Marquette, we had to shoot a couple of MoPac GP38-2’s, the 2333 and 2334 sunning themselves at the UP engine facilities.

John,

Checked my timebook for 1983 and I worked #159(Junction City - Salina Local)on June 23. I had the 165 on yard jobs in April, 1983.
Good switch engine as I recall.
Thanks for the memories.

Best Regards,

Bob H. aka PRose
