Nostalgia & History > CanadianDate: 11/22/07 17:15 Canadian Author: alaska While viewing the thread "A north of the border flashback" by photobob 18 Nov 07 12:26 I am curious if the Canadian also ran at the same time as the Super Contenental pictured. If not, when did the Canadian start?
Did the Canadian always have Budd cars? If not, when did it start using the Budds? Thank you, Hal Date: 11/22/07 17:38 Re: Canadian Author: bnsfbob alaska Wrote:

Both competing trains were inaugurated on the same day in 1955 with new equipment. > Did the Canadian always have Budd cars? If not, > when did it start using the Budds? Yes, the Budd cars were built new, primarily for the Canadian when it began in 1955. Bob Date: 11/22/07 20:37 Re: Canadian Author: alaska Thank you very much bnsfbob.
Hal When did VIA start and what does it stand for? Date: 11/22/07 21:08 Re: Canadian Author: bnsfbob Date: 11/24/07 16:50 Canadian/Super Continental Author: ssafy Via ran them largely on their original routings more or less until 11/81, when the Super was discontinued. The Canadian continued on largely CP until 1/90 when it was switched to the old CN
route it currently runs (the old Super Continental route) In 11/81 The super was replaced by a series of coac trains Edmonton-Winnipeg Winnipeg - Capreol. In 1985 the Super was resurrected in part between Vancouver- Winnipeg and I can't recall whether it continue to Capreol or straight to Toronto or combined with the Canadian @ Winnipeg, and seperate coach train continued to Capreol with bus connections to East Sudbury. In Any event that all ended in 1/90.All with the exception of 2 or 3 X-CN "blue" non-Stainless Steel cars along with all 1st generation diesels (excepting xCN FP9u 6300) are all gone. Ride the Canadian ! Date: 11/24/07 18:50 Re: Canadian/Super Continental Author: ProAmtrak Be cool if VIA can ressurrect it!
