Photo 1111 is the 4005 at Cheyenne. The steam around it makes it looks like it's ready to tackle Sherman Hill. Photo 1112 is in the Cheyenne roundhouse. UP fans, is that an RSD4 or RSD5? Date: 07/05/08 15:25 Re: More summer of 1968 Author: SGillings Photos 1113 and 1115 are of a couple of rotaries in the Cheyenne roundhouse.

Photo 1118 - can anyone identify what this was in the Cheyenne roundhouse? Photo 1119 - this shot could almost have been out of the mid-fifties. That is 4005 in the middle. To the left is the 4023 with the very end of the tender of the 3985 showing in front of it. In the background to the right of the 4005 is the 5511. The engines could not have been positioned much better. Take the plywood out of the window of the 4023 and imagine. Next on my trip was the narrow guage in Alamosa and Durango. I've misplaced a few slides, so after I find them I'll post. Date: 07/05/08 17:11 Re: More summer of 1968 Author: GRNDMND SGillings Wrote:

Date: 07/05/08 21:23 Re: More summer of 1968 Author: BlackWidow So the UP still had Big Boys on their property in 1968? How many did they still have? When did the last one get scrapped or put up for display?
Date: 07/05/08 21:26 Re: More summer of 1968 Author: StStephen Hey bro', GREAT series of photos! A lot of history showing up; amazing what used to be taken for granted...
Date: 07/05/08 23:03 Re: More summer of 1968 Author: SGillings In 1968, UP had two Big Boys on the property. The 4005 (I'm not certain where it is on display - Denver?) and the 4023 that is on display in Omaha. They had two Challengers, the 3977 (I think on display in North Platte) and, of course, the 3985. 0-6-0 4466 was in Grand Island (where it last worked in the fall of 1958) and is now at the California State Railroad Museum. They had 4-6-0 1243, and I don't know where that currently is. They had 2-10-2 5511 which is still in Cheyenne. Finally, they had 4-8-4's 833, 838 and 844(4). John Bush, did I leave any out?

Date: 07/16/08 18:30 Re: More summer of 1968 Author: 4-12-2 I'm sorry it's taken me so long to chime in here, likely everyone who's interested has seen it already.
In fact, I took that shot of 3977 with a young Steve Gillings looking back from the cab. That entire trip was magic for me, not least my personal mecca, Cheyenne. As Steve mentioned, it was absolutely amazing to have five steam locos withing 200 yards of each other, unfortunately all dead. 4005 sat by the oil tank and with all the steam lines around it was truly very easy to imagine she was live. In the shot Steve took of 4005 from the rear you only had to turn around and there was 5511. Until we got there I'd not known these engines had been moved from Green River. Marv is correct, that motor car is DC-3, which has clearly just been painted in that photo. I also took a shot of what appeared to be a newly rebuilt Commonwealth 6-wheel tender truck, doubtless used behind turbines. I sure as heck wish I'd shot the North Platte roundhouse!! At least Steve got the shot above. We had our way wherever we went on UP, no one said a word. A different day. Thanks for all these, Steve!
