Almanor Railroad - 1976
Author: mcfflyer

I've already told some of the story that took me to the Westwood and Susanville, with my little tour of the abandoned in place Westwood Branch. But my work goal was do a little financial research at Collins Pine's Almanor Railroad out of Chester. On the Friday of that week in August 1976, I was told that there would be a train that day, pulled by their only locomotive, Collins Pine Company GE 70 Ton, 166. The train took the loads out to Clear Creek Junction very early in the morning, and by the time I was done at the Collins Pine Company office, I tried to catch it on the way back. Alas, the 166 ran as a light engine back from the WP interchange to the mill. Here are the photos of the "train" in sequence, that day.

Photos 1 and 2 is of the 166 crossing the Lassen County Road A15.

Photo 3 shows not only the 166 but the state car I was driving.

That switcher really looks sweet with those plows at both ends! Thanks for the photos.

Here are the last two. Taken at the west end of "the causeway".

Hope you enjoyed. (BTW, these shots would be razor sharp if I had a better scanner!)

Thanks for sharing! Those are awesome.

I was very briefly involved in advising a group that wanted to start excursion service on the Almanor about 5 years ago. Would have been a nice ride along the lake edge.

Considering the amount of snow that falls in the area, you would need a plow that size

Yes, those plows tell the story of winter on the Almanor. Great photos. Thanks.

Anyone know what the plan is for 166's future?

They haven't ruled out the reuse of the railroad but at the
current business level it sits.

Are you sure? I'd heard its being pulled up, if it hasn't been completely removed by now.
