Conrail's "Executive E's;" Away from Home...
Author: aussiehinz

In the early 1990's, CSX operated a number of inter-railroad inspection trains with its primary connecting roads. Several trips between CSX and UP, BNSF, CP and Conrail were operated during this period, usually utilizing power and/or equipment from both railroads. One such trip, in March 1992, traversing both CSX and Conrail routes, was headed by Conrail's "Executive E's" for the entire distance. The train went from Jacksonville FL, north up the ex ACL "A" Line through Florence SC to tie up at Richmond VA the first day. The second day, the train followed a combined CSX-CR path through Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Reading, Harrisburg and Lurgan PA to tie up at Hagerstown MD. The final half day was spent operating between Hagerstown, Cumberland, and Connellsville to terminate at the ex-PRR Pittsburgh station. For any and all interested, here are three selected views from the March '92 CSX-CR trip.

Cheers,

aussiehinz

1. On the first leg of the trip, the northward trip up the ex-ACL main pauses at the division point of Florence SC for a crew change.

2. At Rocky Mount NC, the inspection train meets Amtrak #89, the southbound "Palmetto."

3. Climbing toward the Allegheny summit at Mance PA on the ex-B&O, the inspection train gets "above the weather" and encounters clear skies after having left Cumberland in heavy fog & drizzle. (Photo now posted correctly; thanks for all the kind assistance.)

I'm guessing 4021 is ex-NY Central, if it kept it's original number.

look closely at your 3rd picture, it`s inside out. It also looks like it should be upgrade
at Mance. My 2 buddies and myself were standing there. I shot video and I was also sweating out the fog
on the way up RTE. 160 from Cumberland. I couldn`t believe there was only one other person around the curve.

Wow, TWL, you are absolutely right! It must have been scanned wrong! You know I was wondering about that when I was reviewing the photos; I had thought I took the shot at Mance but the picture was on the wrong side for it to be there. I even noticed we were operating on the opposite track; which I concluded was plausible since it was reverse signalled after the '85 flooding. It took your close scrutiny to get it right! Thanks much and I will get it re-scanned as soon as I can, then replace this view.

Cheers and thanks,

aussiehinz.

To everyone else reviewing my post; I apologize for the inverted photo # 3. I didn't even catch it until TWL showed it to me. Is it eyesight or memory that's the second thing to go...??

I noticed 4020`s numberboard is backwards.

Footage is in this video:

That's a great video. In retrospect, I'm glad that I posted something that you needed to correct, or else I might not have been aware of your earlier posting of that footage. Earlier this year, I couldn't get any of the video posts to play for some reason, so I skipped over them. Very glad to have seen yours of that CSX-CR train I rode.

Actually 4020 and 4021 are ex-PRR - Conrail renumbered them. The lift rings on the unit's nose are a give-away that it's not of NYC ancestry. The units are now back in PRR Tuscan Red with their original numbers, working for Juniata Terminal Company. Conrail executive E 4022 is the former Erie/EL 833.

And 4022 is back in it's original Erie livery, owned by the New York and Greenwood Lake Railway.

No need to rescan - just flip it in Photoshop.....

I'm afraid I don't have Photo Shop, or know how to use it.

I took the liberty of doing it for you...

You can use Microsoft Office Picture Manager or any similar program that usually comes with a Windows PC. Try double-clicking the file on your PC and see what program opens it. Most photo programs will have an "edit photo" menu, and that should have "flip horizontal" as one of the choices.

Thanks very much; I do, indeed, have that edit feature and have truly learned a valuable bit of information today!

NOW, I recognize the picture! (I've also fixed my original post, thanks to your guidance.)

aussiehinz,

I think I can see you standing in the door on the 4th car of the train in the video!
Small world. That picture looks great now.
