Noting the date, I can say it had been a long time since I had ever seen a train that long actually make it to Riverside.

Stater Bros. Markets had their warehouse in Grand Terrice at the time and those large cars were probably paper supplies.

Now that you mention it, I remember watching them switch that warehouse a long time ago! I thought it was interesting that hand signals were used. The brakeman held an employee timetable in his hand to make his signals more visible.

Large boxcars were for auto parts delivery, unless their use changed later on with the SP.

I concur, Nice 89' boxcars on these locals! Great to see that low-nose and merger painted GP-9 as well.

The large boxcars were used for paper product shipments. Especially as auto parts shipments decreased as the auto companies phased out west coast assembly plants.
