To follow up on my two previous posts on the vanished geep 7's and 9's on UP

Working the crossover and center track at Peru, WY, #275 get's it's local in order. 6-71.

#282 has a train of sugar beets at Rupert, ID 11-72.

#283 sits at the Rupert depot same trip.

#283 again, this time street running on the Provo Sub, Salt Lake City, about a block over from the D&RGW depot. 5-72

#300 and a U50C bring a train through Ogden, from Pocatello.

#321 with an impressive set of power heads east near Henifer, UT. What great variety there was on the main out of Ogden.

Who can provide details about the 283? It looks to be a test case for some form of filters or cooling method. I've not seen photos of that unit before.

Nice photos of one of UP's most common units at one time until the SD40-2 takeover.

really like the 9 and the 50C and the last photo with that lashup

One of the units that were used in the Turbo Charging tests, in fact the unit may still have a Turbo at the time of the photo. Turbos were pre GP-20s.

According to Don Strack's site, the extra openings in 283 were part of a test related to the "Omaha GP20" program, but 283 itself was never actually fitted with a turbo:

"UP 283 participated in the GP9 turbocharging program by having extra openings cut in its car body as a test to investigate engine operating temperatures on a Roots blower-equipped, normal GP9, compared to turbocharger-equipped GP9B 185B. The temperature difference was not significant, but the openings remained throughout the 283's life. UP 283 was not turbocharged."

Back in the 80's and 70's when the GP-7's and 9's were a dime a dozen we used to long for F units or FT's ,but now that they are gone; they weren't so bad after all. I sure glad I shot all the ones I did and wouldn't mind having an opportunity to shoot the ones I didn't
