52 years ago today and tomorrow February 3 and 4, 1961 Lehigh Valley RR's last remaining passenger train 7 and 8, The Maple Leaf, made its final run today ran overnight and completed at Niagara Falls, NY and Newark, NJ respectively in a major snowstorm February 4, 1961. Operating crews on that Lehigh Valley train were based out of Sayre, PA worked between Sayre and Niagara Falls/ Suspension Bridge and Sayre and Lehighton, PA. Operating crews on that train worked between Lehighton and Newark, NJ. were based out of Lehighton.

There were pictures of the last runs in Trains a few months later. Without digging them out, one was taken at Depew NY and other in PA someplace. Seems like one of the runs, eastbound I think; didn't make it all the way to a blizzard. Maybe a LV expert can comment on that?

I believe the eb picture was taken in Bethlehem.

The final EB Maple leaf stalled in the snowy mountains around Wikes Barre when one of the the two Alco Pa units died.They got rescued by freight units, got the PA restarted and made it to Lehighton where the PA's were changed out for two more.Eventually the train was terminated at Newark instead of the usual move to NY Penn Station via PRR electrics.
