An ATSF yesteryear scene at Hutchinson, KS

This photo, courtesy of the Kansas State Historical Society, shows ATSF Railway locomotive No. 2841 pulling a large number of grain hopper cars next to a huge grain elevator in Hutchinson, KS, sometime in the 1960s. Photo credit was given to Orville Brent, Jr. Unknown is the date when the photo was taken. It is believed the picture was taken between 1964 and 1969, according to the KSHS.

It's 230 feet high, 127 feet deep and 2,577 feet long. Two tracks on each side and located between 4th and 11th Avenue's, just to the east of Halstead Street.

Orville and his brother, lived across the street from my house. 1400 block of Fillmore St., Topeka, Ks. The very first 5 x 7 that I had (and still do) was printed by Orville. wag216

Color photos were also taken that day, and some can be found on p.28 of Santa Fe Heritage v.4. The covered hoppers are Ga-137 class, which were built new by Pullman Standard in 1963.

40+ years ago when I attended Junior College there. There were 9 active elevators and one flour mill. Today the flour mill is gone, and about five or so elevators are active.

FAR-MAR-CO / FARMLAND INDUSTRIES once owned it and it was built by by the Borton Co. of Hutchinson. This construction firm built most the concrete elevators in Kansas and into several other surrounding states.

I think, it is THE biggest elevator - for Kansas! Saw it this year with a ADM switcher beside the south front. A impressive structure!! Yeah.
