few around the Port of Los Angeles . .
Author: 3rdswitch

. .
top: Harbor Belt Line Pier A yard in Wilmington, CA (pre Pacific Harbor Line) with two parent road motors plus new HBL motor present 4-94. HBL never owned it's own power until a few years before Pacific Harbor Lines took over operations using HBL owner UP, ATSF and SP power.
middle: UP afternoon Mead Local was northbound coming off Terminal Island crossing the Henry Ford drawbridge (replaced early 2000 with two track Badger lift bridge) 2-91.
bottom: UP Mead Local switching Dow Chemical, UP's only customer on Terminal Island, all other rail customers are handled by Harbor Belt Line who also crosses the Henry Ford bridge to access Terminal Island. The dividing point for the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles on the Island is basically the bridge with Port of Long Beach east (left in shot two) and west (right) of bridge in photo two.

Looks like you caught "Badger Bob" the bridge tender in photo #2.

I have been in the control cab of the Henry Ford Bridge, and observed its operation.
The panel rife with knife switches had a guard rail, so that the operator wouldn't fall against the contacts.
