Nostalgia & History > Just before the GM&O/IC mergerDate: 03/05/14 16:13 Just before the GM&O/IC merger Author: Q4960 I found GM&O SD 40 on the business end of train #33 ready to depart Bloomington, Illinois for Venice and points south [train's final destination was Mobile, AL]. Taken just before the merger with the Illinois Central.

That is so interesting and am I red faced [about as red as the 902]! Railfanned the GM&O those many years, even worked for them thinking that 33 went to Mobile. That may be because I knew that it handled through cars to the South, the only train of such out of Bloomington. It handled a lot of cars for Mobile and only a handful for New Orleans. Where did train 31 originate? Roger Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/05/14 21:44 by Q4960. Date: 03/05/14 21:20 Re: Just before the GM&O/IC merger Author: ClipX Roger,

Date: 03/06/14 03:33 Re: Just before the GM&O/IC merger Author: ctillnc 33 and 31 would have split in Mississippi or Tennessee somewhere. GM&O entered New Orleans over the Southern from Slidell, using some or all of the GM&O's line that ran Meridian-Union-Jackson-Bogalusa-Slidell.

Out of Jackson, Tenn., #31 went down the old M&O side while #33 went down the old GM&N side. CJV Date: 03/06/14 10:08 Re: Just before the GM&O/IC merger Author: ctillnc > Out of Jackson, Tenn., #31 went down the old M&O

The Union-Jackson-Bogalusa-Slidell line used by 33 was ex-GM&N. 31 would have taken the ex-M&O that was the preferred route into Mobile from up nawth at the time. Ironically, CN/IC today reaches Mobile over the ex-GM&N but the ex-M&O into Mobile is abandoned. Date: 03/06/14 14:54 Re: Just before the GM&O/IC merger Author: CNW8531 That's beautiful!!
