Trying to pin down site of ATSF publicity photo
Author: JoCoLB

The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway distributed a single sheet handout at the annual Topeka Railroad Days celebration in Topeka, Kan., on Sept. 3, 4, 5, 1999. Attached is a copy of the printed item.

It's obvious that the photo was not taken in Kansas. But does anyone recognize the actual site of the publicity photo? Thought it might stir comment.

Also attached is a copy of the flip side that shows a diagram of a General Motors EMD Model GP60 --3800 horsepower --- diesel-electric locomotive.

Does anyone know exactly how many years Topeka Railroad Days were conducted?

More than likely, I'd say Tehachapi Pass.

AT&SF 4000 was the class locomotive of 40 Santa Fe GP60s. She was built in 1988 so she was brand new. Was she displayed at Topeka Railroad Days that year?

Looks to me like it's at Caliente, eastbound climbing out of the valley towards tunnel 1.

Think the engine has already passed the
Tehachapi Creek bridge?

Correct, and to echo UP9000 this is indeed Caliente, CA on the approach to Tunnel 1.

All of the below, IIRC:

Topeka Railroad Days started in 1986 as part of the state's 125th birthday celebration. UP 8444, at the time, moved EB across the KP for a couple of days to get there. That was my first steam chase. RR Days was held over Labor Day weekend at Forbes Field, south of Topeka. They moved it into the city one year in the early 2000's and had a big drop in attendance. They went back to Forbes the following year, again, with disappointing attendance. That was the end of Rail Road days, as we knew it.

Yep, when they moved it downtown, that sure ruined it. That was the last time that I was there. upkpfan
