Berkeley, Ca No, 6 problem 8-26-1977

I was at the north end of Berkeley waiting for No. 6 to go east and caught the train break-in-two between the locomotives and the baggage car. From a distance I noticed the "big hole" red light come on and then steam escaping as a gap between the locomotives and car grew.
The first photo shows the train shortly after it parted.
The second Photo show the train after it stopped
Photo three shows the locomotives returning.
It was interesting that the locomotives continued east after the break-in-two to a point where the block signal seen in photo 3 cleared to green.

A final photo of the meeting of officials and the crew.
Unfortunately I was short on film and left to get some more and by the time I returned, No. 6 was back together and departed.

Santa Fe Railway Passenger Car Reference Series- Volume Four, look on page 161 and notice the picture of Business Car Topeka that became uncoupled from the Southwest Chief east of Springer, NM . Incident happened at speed, and its good thing no one was crossing between the cars when it happened. Quite fortuitous that that the photographer was where he was. As the caption stated" Not a good day for the Roadmaster."

I remember many years ago there was a minor derailment in SP's Newhall Yard in San Jose. There were about 20 people gathered around to re-rail it: 18 white hats watching two guys work.

In the late 80's #11 used to P/U an extra car at OAK (16th St) for the trip on to LAX. (and #14 dropped it on the way north)
The car was always an ex-ATSF HiLevel. For some reason this car tended to uncouple itself now and then! I was working 11 once when we dropped the car near Santa Margarita. I think it happened to one, and maybe two, other 11's.
After that they were VERY thorough about adding the car- stretching it more than once, visually confirming the pin had indeed dropped, and then tie-wrapping everything.
It seemed to solve the problem, at least I never heard that it happened again.
