Nostalgia & History > MUNI Car #1Date: 05/04/15 11:23 MUNI Car #1 Author: MartyBernard MUNI #1 was built in 1912 in San Francisco by W. L. Holman for $7,700, part of MUNI’s first order of ten streetcars. The photo was taken during the Historic Trolley Car Parade in April 1992.

This is the same type of fender used in LA up until the 1940s, and every now and then a visitor at OERM will see the fender on one of our LARy cars and ask, "Is that a cow-catcher?" and I'll tell them, "Most cows have enough sense to stay out of the way of streetcars, but some folks don't watch where they're going, so the cars were required to carry people catchers. The original 'crash test dummies' were used to test streetcar fenders."
