Railroad officials could be spotted from some distance because of the hats and suits they wore.  They are featured here on March 16 1947 inspecting and climbing all over Texas & Pacific E-7 # 2001 which along with # 2000 have arrived in Longview, Tx. from St Louis, Mo. on the Sunshine Special for the first time.  The two units are the first of 4 purchased for the Sunshine Special which would later be named The Eagle.  There will be no delay because of the their inspection since the train will be broken into two parts, one  for the MP to go south and the other for the T&P section to go west..  The E units were the first diesel road power bought by the T&P and that caused them to become cover material for the company magazine T&P Topics in May 1947.  Their numbers would total 10 engines and later T&P would buy E-8's to finish out what was needed for passenger trains.

So pleased with their performance of the EMD's the T&P started receiving many F-7's in 1949  and in about 2  1/2   years steam was gone.

Robert Hall and Jim Clinton suits were big on most RR's in the day.

Amtrak has a Superintendent in Los Angeles that keeps the tradition alive.

Here is a shot of the 2008 which I'm guessing is at El Paso.  Photo courtesy of John Mills.  I believe the picture was underexposed when taken, but you work with what you have.  Still pretty neat though.
