Slide Scans from 60's: WP, Feather River Railway and SP
Author: railroadbill

The pix from the 60's were taken with a Kodak Bantam 828 film camera (had a bellows). 70's pix with a Nikon "Nikkomat" (brought back from Japan by an airplane pilot friend - would be called "grey market" today)

The first one is the CZ at the WP 3rd Street Station in Oakland, CA.  I hope you don't mind that I fixed it up.

Good job w/Photoshop!

For anyone unfamiliar with 828 film, this was a roll film format similar in size to 35 mm but just a little bigger.  Several very good cameras were made in this format, including my first serious camera, which I was given in 1970 when my parents first began to realize that I was serious about train pictures.

Great optics, the real disadvantage was the roll film format which required several seconds to advance from one shot to the next.  Also, only 8 frames per roll if I remember correctly.  The world got a lot better in 1972 when I got my first 35 mm camera (a Konica rangefinder).

Midway siding on Altamont Pass. Surprising to see the westbound freight train on the main with the eastbound CZ in the siding. Perhaps the train was non clearing.

Great shots, thanks. Note that 3 of 4 of the switchers in the SP Bakersfield photo are wearing the black and solid orange "Halloween" paint scheme.
