What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?
Author: Auburn_Ed

I did manage a few train rides on R&R, as shown in #1.  #2 taken from MY office, just off Haiphong.  On this Memorial Day, help preserve the memory of my 58,226 comrads who didn't return, along with ALL who gave their lives in other wars for this country.  Too bad recent administrations don't remember.

???? Out of all our recent presidents he's the least likely to get us involved in something where we don't belong. He inherited the Iraq and Afghanistan mess. My father served as a career man and two tours in Vietnam. He's agreement with most of his buddies that it was a waste and crying shame that that many of his buddies died over there for something that was none of our business. If you want to comment on short memories, what about those who were in office at the time or dodged the draft  and then got us right into another mess.

Okay, I'll soften it a little........refer to "recent administrations" instead of POTUS.

One has to wonder if the cure for cancer or cold fusion didn't die on the battlefield somewhere. Those ideas get overrun by such petty ideas.

Sadly, I don't see better times anywhere in the future.

Just my 2 cents worth here, but I am thankful for all that served and died with honor serving our country. I wonder if we hadn't stood up to communism, fascism, Nazi-ism, what would our world look like? And while we are at it, would it be better for a young man/woman to die on a battlefield for freedom, or die over some white powder or marijuana plant, STD, or for a fellow gang member? Happy Memorial day to all and God bless our troops.

Those little SKYHAWKS sure could carry alot of heavy weight.  Stout little planes.

And those SKYWARRIORS?  They were built to be the NAVY's nuclear bomber.  Problem was landing them on a carrier deck.  That's a big plane.  Now if they had to land on one of today's CARL VINSON-class supercarriers, it might be easier.  But to think they landed those big things on those smaller carriers back then boggles my mind...and that explains why many of them crashed in the process.

Thank you for your service, Ed, and the same to all of you who served.   Some seem to forget.

I was a bombadier/navigator on A-3's, the photo above was taken from the right seat of a Skywarrior.  We landed on Essex Class carriers (Ticonderoga, with a WOODEN deck), 27-Charlies (Oriskany), and modern carriers.  Max t.o. weight onboard ship was about 68k lbs, 80k lbs ashore.  The Navy didn't lose many coming aboard, but during launches and enroute the losses were more significant.  It was (as we say) a real man's airplane, the last of the "open the door and jump" aircraft.

Take a moment to think about all of those who didn't come back.   A lot of us served and are fortunate to still be around to grumble about politics.
At the rate we are going, our next war is going to be on our soil like it or not.   Proof that you should always finish what you start or don't start it.

having served 1961-65 my one regret is that I wan't down welcoming the troops back with cheers.....I will never understand the protesters who spit on our troops when they should have been spitting on the politicans who got us in a crappy war.   I honor all vets....not so much our politicans.   Arlen

I don't think we'll ever be speaking Arabic, but you better tell all your children and grandchildren to learn Mandarin!

Yes, the "empty suit" sure did inherit a mess--and then proceeded to make it significantly worse.  Where is another Ronald Reagan, when we so desperately need one?  As for where we are right now regarding our air power, some folks here might be interested to read this:  http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/05/25/budget-cuts-impact-us-ability-to-fight-enemy-air-force-general-warns/

Thank you Auburn Ed for your service and thoughts of the many who didn't make it back.
I was a young Assy Planner at Douglas Torrance, CA 1966-42.. We were veru busy making new A-4 Skyhawks and spare parts for the A-3's.
Our old timer mentors were former El Segundo men who had built the A-3's.

Ronald Regan (who never saw a minute of combat) saddled us with trillions of debt, then violated the US law by supplying arms to Iran in exchange for cash for the Contras. At least Ronald Regan served. That can't be said for Dick Cheney, who escaped the draft because he had "other priorities". George W. Bush went to the "head of the line" and got into the National Guard and stayed out of Vietnam. These two started an illegal war that killed tens of thousands, and turned a region into a secretarian bloodbath because of their hubris and failure to apply anthing resembling critical thinking in the planning for a post war Iraq.   And you say Obama made it worse? LOL. Thanks for the laugh.

Oh, and don't forget how he shredded the air traffic control system after the PATCO strike in '81.  He lied to the controllers pure and simple.  One would have to know about the strike to understand it, but nobody cared anyway.  Reagan was among the WORST presidents this country has seen.
