Those things were the definition of a "rattletrap." Whew. The Jersey Arrow mu's were a huge step forward (100 series, I believe built by St. Louis?)

images 3,4 & 5 are taken at Baldwin interlocking and your train is nb on #2 track ... image was taken prior to I-95 being built over the interlocking ...

These are some of the most wonderful photos you've posted, Marty.

The first two are taken in the vicinity of C Interlocking on the west side of the Washington Terminal tracks just south of New York Avenue.  The red arched building in the background is the old Washington Coliseum, which hosted the Washington Caps for one season.  It was also the site of the first Beatles concert in America, a day or 2 after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.  The building survives, remarkably.  It was a trash-transfer station for several, and now REI says they're going to convert it to a store.

The Washington-Baltimore commuter business has increased radically.  In 1970 it was 2 or 3 trains each way each weekday.  Today there are 28 MARC trains in each direction each weekday.

In Photo 5, northbound on Track 2 passing an MU on Track 1, that's the Baldwin Locomotive Works headquarters at the back right.  That building still stands, too, and has been redeveloped as an office building with several tenants, including FRA Region 2 headquarters.

to expound on K8's description ... the PRR branched off sb off #1 track (technically the "0" track since removed along with the connection) here at Baldwin interlocking on an elevated RofW, bridged Rt 291 and the Reading RR branch line to Marcus Hook and connected to their 60th St Branch line to Marcus Hook that also paralleled the Reading's branch line to Marcus Hook, also elevated at that location for the connection ... the connection came off the 4 track main for sb moves and did a 180 degree turn nb for coal trains to service the Eddsystone power plant which is now gas fired and the destination of Bakken crude oil trains ...
