Nostalgia & History > Bessemer & Lake Erie -- a look back, part 2Date: 08/26/15 12:14 Bessemer & Lake Erie -- a look back, part 2 Author: NKP715 Here's a dozen shots - another look back at the Bessemer & Lake Erie - -
1. In May of 1986, SD9 844 is pulling onto the Conrail "42 running track" in Erie, PA to set out a loaded coal train. The B&LE in Erie was a common sight back then, but the next 3 views show some of the more unusual. 2. SD9 843 (along with 825) was on lease to the Allegheny Railroad, seen here departing Erie for Warren, PA in June of 1986. She's probably thinking, "this ain't the way to the Harbor !" 3. In March of 1977, another SD9, 838 is serving as a load unit during testing of a TRA (Taiwan Railway Administration) electric on the GE test track. 4. Looking really out of place, F7 722 and two sisters are seen in Pennsy's OD yard on Erie's east side on Sept 23, 1964. 5. A visitor in Albion, PA: SD45 demo 4352 is in the terminal in May of 1967. The demonstration runs were successful, but the Bessemer opted to go with SD38's. They didn't need the higher horsepower motive power. 6. SD9 845 leads a train of scrap past Queen Jct in October of 1982. It's a short train, and the rear end power can be seen peeking over the last cars. 7. And here are the Queens of Queen Jct, 727 and 728 in June of 1982, preparing to depart with empty hoppers. 8. Back to Albion - - SD7 451 is at the engine house, still properly attired with her "butterknife" stripe and wings in this Nov 1, 1964 view. 9. Lots of color in this shot as SD38-2 890 leads Missabe SD18m 859 and two other 38's out of Conneaut in Oct of 1999. 10. In June of 1973, Wallace Jct in Girard, PA was still a busy place - - note the cars in the yard. 865-835-877 are working the yard; the adjacent track is the N&W main, with the controlled siding closest to the building. the cars 11 & 12. Jumping back a few years to 1963 into my "B&W era," a pair of SD18's leads a southbound past Locust Lane, at milepost E7 on the Erie Branch in November. We're about 1.6 miles from Wallace Jct. Even then, piggyback cars were not all that common. A few months earlier in August I'm standing on that hill, as F7 719 and SD7 454 are on a caboose hop headed for Wallace and probably Erie. Hope you enjoyed the look back !
