ATSF at Valley Falls doubleheader
Author: KCRW287

A Santa Fe doubleheader at Valley Falls Kansas, 81 and 183 getting

a full head of steam to get out of the Delaware River Valley and get to

Topeka. The real photo postcard is circa 1910, and I think the photo goes

back a few years earlier.

Harry Mentch (deceased now) was a fireman and engineer at KC, worked west to Emporia mostly, and that St. Joe job was a branch on his territory. His son Bill, who is still working, told me Harry and his engine fell through a bridge at Valley Falls during a flood and washout. He survived, and was fished out of the water down stream by a farmer. Probably the same bridge on the old alignment.

That's a great photograph, especially considering when it was taken.  Give us more!
