Does Anyone Remember the Canadian?
Author: YukonYeti

Once "true" streamliners were the toast of the day.  We had the Zephyrs, the Cannonball, Orange Blossum Special and a host of others.  Now, the sole remaining streamliner that we have is VIA's Canadian.. From its first run on April 24, 1955 to its transfer to Via on October 28, 1978, it has and always will be one of North America's premier trains . It is time to take a look back: to see where we have been and where we are..

Worthy topic for a thread. Managed to get a brief ride on a mini-Canadian from Ottawa to Montreal. Had a buffet dome all to myself. Didn't think about it as a business proposition at the time, just a great ride. Thanks for posting your collection of photos!

Well, too bad some of the original photographers are lost to time.  I love the pure GP-9 consist. If you can't have a perfect A-B-A consist, bring on the Geeps !
But, thanks for posting. Lots to see here.

Yes, I remember the "Canadian" and that all Geep consist had to be rare.

I rode the train in 1975 out of Vancover and we had FP9 1405 and a Geep.  At
Calgary, the gGeep came off and the 1406 got added!  (Numerologists should
be having a field day here.)  We overnighted in Montreal and on our #1, the
1405 had been replaced by an FP7.  Great trip although the same menu got
old about the fifth day.

Dear Yukon,

Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos of Canada's greatest passenger train, and a personal favorite of mine. My favorite image is the first one when CP used the fancy lettering on the sides of those beautiful maroon and grey F-units! The food on board, and the attitude of the staff were always great, and even in the early years of VIA, it was still a wonderful train. Hated it when the real "Canadian" was discontinued and the name and equipment moved to the CN "Super Continental" routing. That is still a nice train, but the route is not nearly as spectacular as the CP mainline. The original CP and VIA "Canadian" ranked up there with America's finest trains, and today's train is still far better than anything Amtrak operates...

Thanks again!

Pretty amazing that basically the same equipment as was introduced in 1955 can be ridden today (or at least 3 days a week/2 in Winter) albeit it on a mostly different routing. In fact, the equipment looks in better shape today then they were in the later years under CP ownership. Long may this continue, and hopefully a return to the CP Ontario routing that has been rumored.

Yukon Yeti knows!  It's a damn shame that this route isn't available to the average Canadian to enjoy on an affordable passenger train!
