BB: Going away shot UP stock train 1968
Author: valmont

Back on Feb. 28th I posted a Bruce Black shot of UP turbine #29 pulling a string of stock cars. Of course Bruce, not one to miss another fine shot after the head end of a train had passed, shot this going away one ... about 10 mi east  of Laramie, WY on 10/6/68.

Ah, yes rolling mightily down the steep grade of 3 Track westbound, which was the original 1869 route (though this curve was widened), from the US Highway 287 bridge. A nice shot of once-important hot livestock traffic not handled any more. === === = === JLH

Great photo of things long gone. Location is actually east (south) of Laramie.

Looks like the beginning of the end for roofwalks.  Were they eliminated by an FRA madate, or what?  What year did cars begin being built without them or existing cars begin having them removed?

Westbound empty cattle cars, not a hot train.

Best regards,

Outlawed for all new cars produced beginning in 1966.  AAR required the be removed from all cars in interchange service by sometime in mid-1970's, though I think the date was ultimately pushed back to the early 1980's, by which time they had mostly been removed or the cars retired and scrapped. (FRA did not exist in the 1960s).

All cars built after April 1966, and entering service before October 1966 must not be equipped with roofwalks, except those with roof hatches. (49 CFR 231.27, paragraph i.)

By December 31, 1983, all cars built before April 1966 must not be equipped with roofwalks. (49 CFR 231.1, note)
