M.D. McCarter In Arizona Passed Away
Author: wabash2800

I got word today indirectly that he passed away last week? Malcolm was a professional photographer and railfan. He shot many railroad photos going back to the Indiana Interurban era. He also sold many other photos (mostly B&W) from photographers (including Harry Zilmer and Bill Schwartz out my way.)  Malcolm proabably had a hundred thousand negatives and had volumes of catalogs to got with them, mostly of the steam era across the United States. I've been buying his photos for years and used them in my publications. He was well over 90 and hailed from Peru, Indiana, though he moved to Arizona some years ago. In later years his daughter printed his photos. They both did it the old fashioned way with developing chemicals and enlargers to the end as far as I know. I enjoyed talking with him on the phone. Malcom was very knowledgable of Interurbans in Indiana. I have not seen an obituary and do not know the status of the collection.

Sorry to hear of his passing. I'd ordered numerous prints from him over the years.

Take a look at the PDF of his catalog to see the breadth of the collection

R.I.P., Mr. McCarter. I was happy to have helped point him towards the Wabash Railroad Historical Society. His collection was vast and centered on steam and early diesels.

He will be missed. I acquired this image of the Santa Fe's first PA's on display here in L.A. along Exposition Blvd. from him, and obtained his permission (with instructions for use here on T.O.).

Incidentially, Mr. McCarter was one of the original ten charter members of what was then the Illinois Electric Railway Museum who poined up $100 each in 1953 to buy the former Indiana Railroad 65 from the Crandic.

Who knew then what that would lead to 60-plus years later!

Here is "The Car That Started It All" on Memeber's Showcase Weekend in 2007. My photos.

Godspeed and clear signals, Mel! Howard Odinious has been patiently holding the railfan seat open on the Electroliner for you.
