Author: gcm

(1-2)  Less than a year since the last reguarly scheduled passenger train left the station (Amtrak
Lone Star) three tracks remained. Gulf Coast Chapter NRHS cars on the left.
Check out all the Missouri Pacific station wagons.

(3)  Two cars here this day.
Missouri Pacific business car 9 and ex-Great Northern buffet-lounge observation
          Appekunny Mountain.

(4-6)  Appekunny Mtn was built in 1950 by AC&F for the Empire Builder.
It was in Houston for a number of years owned by Grant Supply Co. I'm not sure if they
         owned it at this time.

(7-8)  Later the car was painted to SP Daylight colors for the World's Fair Daylight train
          between Portland and New Orleans.
I believe the car is now with the California Northern RR painted in their colors.
The track area at Union Station is now the Astros Minute Maid Park.

My own photos of this car. I'd have to go look at the slide mounts to check when I took them.

They did own it then - just noticed their name above the windows.

Nice shots.
The chapter cars were in great shape back then also.

The Appekunny Mountain is in the Albany, Oregon area, still painted in Cal Northern colors.  It seems like the Albany & Eastern has used it once in a while for some of their excursion runs.

ConCor made about a million N-scale models of that car...

I saw the Appekunny Mtn in Davis, CA a few times in the last 15 years.

Here's some photos from 2010 from myself and two other posters.

It's a very pretty car.  I hope they've been patching that roof in Albany...

Here's the Appekunny Mountain on the VSP&S 1970 Mt. Shasta Limited and the VSP&S 1971 Snowflake Limited.  The late Portland, Oregon professional organist Howard Horwath is seen at the organ in the round end in both photos.
