Some more SP hydraulics, just K-M's
Author: cewherry

After posting the photo of SP 9151, re-reading Joseph Strapacs words about these unique SP locomotives and
then 'Notch16' Bob's excellent background information I decided to take another look at my collection to see if
there were more that I could add to the discussion. Here are three more for your consideration.
See: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4208187

First is 9101, one of the original car-body configuration units built in June 1961. It's SP classification is KF636A-1.
The 'A' denoted it being a cab unit; it acquired its plow pilot in the spring of 1965 and was retired on June 21, 1968.
Here it is getting its running gear steam cleaned by a laborer at San Jose, CA in November 1968.

Second is 9009. This was one of the second generation units, built in February, 1964. All of of SP's hydraulic locomotives were
re-numbered and reclassified in October, 1965. It was classified reclassified KF636-1. This photo was taken on September 12, 1965 at
Oakland RH so it is wearing its original number. It was re-numbered to 9112 and retired on October 29, 1968.

Third is 9117, likewise a KF636-1 and also among the second generation hydraulics. Here it is passing the Stockton
depot in the hot summer sun of July 1966. It's original number was 9014, built in March, 1964 and retired on September 1, 1967.

Again, my source for data is Joseph Strapac's Southern Pacific Motive Power Annual 1968-1969.
Like many of us I wish now that I had taken more photos of these during my brief 15 months in the bay area. Oh, well.

I do believe if I recall the 9151 is one of the three Rio grandes turned over to sp. Going by the airtanks on the roof. A Rio grande thing.not sp. It will be nice to hear the 9010 run again. Sp's second batch of Ml4000. Work continues, but not sure of when it be under its own power.

According to Strapac the 3 Rio Grande units were 4001-4002-4003 which ultimately became SP 9103-
9104-9105.

The 9151 was one of the 3 Alcos.
