Santa Fe sulphur train near Sealy,Tx -- May 76
Author: gcm

I was heading up highway 36 along the Santa Fe when a southbound unit sulphur train showed up. A bad place for pictures, so I decided to try a few shots between the pole line.
The sulphur trains on the ATSF started (I believe) around 1969 and ran between Rustler Springs in west Texas and Galveston.
All the engines on this train appear to be SD26 units.
Mid train units had a B unit converted to remote control (locotrol).

I caught another sulphur train about a year later and posted those a number of years ago  --  http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,2489295

Interesting train on some nice looking track.  I always thought the ATSF had track that was somewhat neglected on their Texas lines compared to their racetrack route.   Was the track condition present here more the norm for the Texas lines than I thought?

Thanks for sharing the photos.  Nice catch.

Most of the Santa Fe lines in Texas that I saw in the 70's and 80's were very well maintained.
This particular line - the Southerm Division main between Galveston-Ft.Worth was 79mph in many places for the Lone Star (Rosenberg-Ft.Worth) and Inter-American (Temple-Ft.Worth).

And the Dublin sub had been upgraded with welded rail except Cresson to Cleburne.  However a wreck on a curve close to Cresson where jointed rail dates were as far back the early 1900's caused Santa Fe to put welded rail on it to.

The ATSF, locomotives and pole line are nostalgia items. Nice photos.
