Long Ago and Far Away
Author: nycman

Long ago was 77 years ago and far away was Little Falls, NY. On this date, April 19, 1940,the New York Central Lake Shore Limited wrecked on the Gulf Curve in Little Falls. That fine looking J-1e Hudson 5315, seen in better days, was destroyed in the wreck, and at least 31 fatalities took place. 5315 ended up against the rock wall in about the center of the photo of the tracks.

Great image. What's the single-track line to the right? Ah,it's the Little Falls & Dolgeville!

A terrible tragedy. Thanks for posting these pictures.

A poignant 2015 article about the catastrophe can be found here: http://www.timesunion.com/tuplus-local/article/Haunting-echoes-of-horrific-1940-Little-Falls-6264809.php
Worst disaster to befall the NYC in over 60 years (since Ashtabula), if I recall correctly.

Thanks Mary. I have the collection of wreck photos, and some are pretty gruesome. Here is another shot of the vicinity.
