1981: Somerville, NJ in the Spring

A weekend trip was to see the Duke Gardens, but when I saw there was a Somerville Train Station, I had to take a chance. I was rewarded with this shot, which must be one of the most desolate-looking commuter trains I've seen.

Thanks for the picture. NJT now has a high level platform and spiffy station.

It used to be a four track station. With low level platforms that would horrify risk managers today.

The branch down to Flemington branched off to the left.

Interesting consist. Looks like some ex-MoPac cars in the train. What did they look like inside during use on the CNJ? Thanks for posting.

Coaches came from BN fallen flags. Most were intercity coaches with 2 x 2 seating and remained that way.

Here are a few more recent pictures of the station. Just before the rebuilding, and afterward.

Also the jewel box of a station building. That's now a lovingly restored law office.

The 4107 was already a dozen years old when the picture was taken, and incredibly is still in service forty-nine years after being delivered to the CNJ.
