Switcher Saturday, Old and forgotten.
Author: hank

While railfanning the Birmingham Southern railroad in May 1997, I ran across these two old and forgotten switchers. No idea of make or model. Location was near Birmingham, Alabama.

Hank.

Nice find.
The top one looks like an Alco?
An abandoned rail yard or factory site?

#5 looks like an Alco S-2 or S-4. It has the larger radiator opening.

Former TC&I steel mill in Ensley, Ala. TC&I was a division of US Steel. Like many (not all) of the Birmingham-area steel plants, it closed in the 1970s.

Looks like they escaped the scrappers at least for awhile into 1997.

TCI Ensley works did not close until the mid-80's.

Hearths closed 76, melt shop and most of if not all the blast furnaces closed 79. Very little left after that.
